Correctional Services Women’s Network wins inaugural Australian High Commissioner's Award
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is Inspiring Change. Australian High Commissioner, Andrew Byrne, has recognised the inspiring work of the Correctional Services of Solomon Islands Women’s Network with a major award.
The annual Australian High Commissioner’s International Women’s Day Award recognises inspirational and pioneering Solomon Islands women who show leadership, innovation and courage, and whose achievements have opened the way for others.
“I was delighted to present this award to the Correctional Services of Solomon Islands Women’s Network for their exceptional work in promoting gender equality in the workplace,” Mr Byrne said.
“The Women’s Network demonstrates a range of inspiring qualities. They lobbying for institutional change and now have an impressive Gender Action Plan. They are also making a regional impact and openly celebrate the achievements of women working in the sector,” he said.
“By recognising these impressive role models, we at the Australian High Commission hope to inspire others to support gender equity and increase leadership roles for Solomon Islands women” Mr Byrne said.
Leah Alufooa, Chair of the Women’s Network said she was honoured to receive the Award on behalf of the Network.
“This year we will celebrate eight years of the Correctional Services of Solomon Islands Women’s Network with this award from the Australian High Commission. Our dream for the next 10 years is that we will be in decision making roles,” Ms Alufooa said.
The ceremony took place as part of the Australian High Commission’s International Women’s Day breakfast. International Women’s Day is celebrated globally each year on 8 March to commemorate the economic, political and social achievements of women.
