Australia helps Solomon Islands protect its marine resources
… but loses soccer match to local team!
The Australian frigate, HMAS Parramatta departed Honiara on Monday 14 July 2014 after spending three days in port.
HMAS Parramatta is visiting the Pacific to help Solomon Islands and other Pacific countries protect their fisheries resources. The ship’s visit was also an opportunity to help the local community and take on the mighty Titans in a hard-fought soccer match.
On Saturday afternoon, the Titans faced the best football players from the HMAS Parramatta team in a friendly match.
The Titans narrowly defeated the visiting team 3-2.
“It was a great game played with great spirit,” said HMAS Parramatta Commanding Officer, Commander Andrew Willis.
“We’d like to thank everyone who went along to support the two teams and to the organiser, Mr Gideon Omokirio,” said Commander Willis.
Over the weekend, personnel from HMAS Parramatta also assisted with the refurbishment of Tuvaruhu School which was severely damaged during the April floods.
“Taking part in the refurbishment of Tuvaruhu School was a great opportunity for our personnel to contribute to the ongoing flood recovery, and to engage with local residents in Honiara,” said Commander Willis.
“The refurbishment project was a great success thanks to the strong support of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, Tuvaruhu Community High School Principal, staff and school community, Honiara City Council Education Authority and the Australian aid program,” said Commander Willis.
“It’s been great pleasure to welcome the HMAS Parramatta and its crew to Honiara,” said Australian High Commissioner, Andrew Byrne.
“A highlight of the visit to Honiara was the opportunity to host a reception on board the ship, which was attended by Prime Minister Lilo,” said Commander Willis.
