New group of Australian Volunteers set to take up various roles in Solomon Islands.
The Australian High Commission has welcomed thirteen new Australian Volunteers to Solomon Islands who will use their skills and expertise to develop host organisations across the country.
The volunteers, funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program will work in the areas of health, water resources, environment, justice, sports, finance and education to improve the lives of Solomon Islanders.
Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands Andrew Byrne said that 56 volunteers are currently serving in the country in various Government and community organisations and more are expected to arrive throughout the year.
“The volunteers are part of Australia’s broader efforts to assist Solomon Islands and it people to tackle development challenges.”
“They will be sharing skills and knowledge with local counterparts and are sure to learn a lot from their hosts as well.”
“Through their participation in work, sports and the community, the volunteers will build links and friendship that will last beyond their assignment.”
The volunteers have a range of assignments, from helping to develop counselling services for victims of domestic violence in Western Province to ensuring the natural marine resources of the country are protected for future generations. Ten schools throughout the country are also set to have improved water systems with the assistance of a female water engineer who will be working with Caritas.
Every year more than 60 Australian volunteers work in Solomon Islands using their skills and expertise to help build organisations in Solomon Islands.
