Australia supports Human Rights in Solomon Islands
The Australian High Commission is pleased to announce its support to local NGO, Live and Learn to advance Human Rights awareness in the Solomon Islands.
“Australia’s assistance to Solomon Islands has a strong focus on improving human rights” Third Secretary Ms Gabrielle Stewart said at a ceremony to mark the beginning of Live and Learn’s project in support of Human Rights in Solomon Islands. “Our support to Live and Learn to spread awareness on human rights reflects the importance of these issues to Australia”.
Live and Learn’s project to advance human rights at the village level through education and learning will involve 20 villages in Guadalcanal, Malaita, Renbel, Choiseul and Central Province.
In addition to raising awareness on human rights and creating space for communities to discuss these issues, Live and Learn’s project will also focus on the link between human rights and the environment with reference to issues such as the right to access safe water and the right to manage forestry resources.
The project will also develop understanding within communities on how to access legal advice and take action on their concerns.
Live and Learn is one of many NGO’s across Asia and the Pacific to receive funding under the annual Human Rights Small Grants Scheme, a scheme for protecting and promoting human rights at the community level.
Australia is proud to support Live and Learn to raise awareness about Human Rights issues in Solomon Islands and will continue to ensure that these issues are encouraged and supported.
