More than eight thousand people gathered on Sunday night at the Multi-Purpose Hall in Honiara to watch the finalists of the Solo Icon competition battle it out for the top spot.

The annual competition finals saw finalists competing in three categories, namely the 2013 Star School Category, the 2013 Young Executive Category and the 2013 Solo Icon Category.

The 2013 Icon category was won by Miss Melody Fefera a 14 year old Form one student of Betikama Adventist College, while Saint Nicholas School topped the Star School Category. The Young Executive category was won by Derick Houkura

The winners of both the Icon category and the Young Executive Category each received cash prizes and return tickets to Brisbane.

The Australia High Commission has been supporting the event since 2008 and this year’s support involved more than $70,000.00 Solomon Dollars

Speaking at the event on Sunday night, the Australia High Commissioner Matt Anderson said “The Australian High Commission is extremely proud to support Solo Icon. I want to thank the judges, contestants and their supporters for making this year’s solo icon the best one yet.”

“We wanted to provide a stage on which the future of Solomon Islands could shine. And we wanted to provide a venue where Solomon Islanders could come together, in fun and music, to celebrate the extraordinary talent on show.”

“We can all agree that Solomon Islands has a remarkable future, built on the reputation of the talented artists on show tonight.”

“Tonight, the voice of the Happy Isles was heard across the Pacific!”

The competition was established in 2006 by the Global Youth Leadership Nexus and past winners have assumed mentoring roles in later competitions encouraging young Solomon Islanders to strive to reach their full potential.
