AUSTRALIANS TREK TO THE TOP OF MOUNT POPOMANASEU
Second Secretaries, Ben O’Reilly and Dave Inabinet and AusAID’s Mathew Tasker started their hike at Gold Ridge Mine to a village called Nanala, which is also along the bush tracks regularly used by the people of Weathercoast going to and from Honiara.
The climb took them three days to complete.
Dave Inabinet described the climb as a challenging and stunning hike that will test the endurance and skills of those who give it a go.
He also added that it is encouraging to see local communities getting involved in eco-tourism.
Mr O’Reilly described his experience as an epic and rewarding challenge that both Solomon Islanders and tourists should attempt.
He said “The natural beauty of the jungles, the rivers and the mountain was just great, and our Guadalcanal hosts were very welcoming.”
Meanwhile the Nanala Community is on track to receive almost $80,000 in Direct Aid Program assistance from the Australian High Commission to go towards much needed solar lighting and building materials.
The solar lighting will ensure that the community has lighting at night and the building materials will be for a school in the community. The establishment of a school will contribute to solving the problem of high illiteracy rates and the long walking distances children of the community take each day to get an education.
It is a privilege for the High Commission to be able to assist a community in need.
