G’DAY SOLOMONS! INAUGURAL FUN RUN ATTRACTS HUGE CROWD

The inaugural G’day Solomon Islands Fun Run kicked off successfully this morning, with around three thousand people having registered for the event.

Australian High Commissioner Matt Anderson, who took part in the run, says the event was a great opportunity to strengthen the strong friendship between Australians and Solomon Islanders and to also highlight the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.

“The G’day Solomons Fun Run aimed to promote a healthy and inclusive approach to physical activity. We hope it also has the long term benefit of encouraging more people to live healthy lifestyles,” he said.

“We’ve been really excited to see the people of Honiara jump at the chance to say ‘G’day’. We’ll be posting a lot of fantastic photos on our Facebook page, Australia in Solomon Islands too.”

Matt Anderson also emphasised that the event took place with the gracious support of many sponsors: “On behalf of the Australian High Commission, I would like to thank our sponsors who have contributed to the success of the Fun Run,” he said.

The day started with aerobics for warm up before the 5km run and the 3km walk out to west Honiara and back to the gallery grounds. Happy runners and walkers were treated to a healthy breakfast and took part in different activities held by various businesses, government agencies and organisations.

There was fun for everyone as families, sports teams, school children and many others turned out to try their luck in the Fun Run.

Major prizes for the Fun Run were announced at the event, based on participation: sixteen lucky people received major prizes after names were drawn out of a basket. More than one hundred spot prizes were also handed out to those taking part in the run and walk.

The Australian High Commission congratulates all those who took part in the inaugural G’day Solomon Islands Fun Run, and looks forward to seeing you all again next year.
