Australian Member of Parliament Bert van Manen has congratulated the people of Solomon Islands on a peaceful and professional election day. He says that Solomon Islands has economic potential, but the road ahead will require leadership.

“During my time in Honiara, I was fortunate to meet some of the local businessmen. They want the opportunity to grow their business, something I understand as a previous small business owner myself,” said Mr van Manen.

“I am sure that newly elected representatives will understand that small and medium businesses are the cornerstone of growing economies.”

Mr van Manen encouraged the new Solomon Islands Government to set a clear direction for growth.

“Now is the time to build a strong economic base and secure Solomon Islands’ economic future. Government and business need to work together to create the right business environment and encourage innovative thinking. I am proud of what Australia is doing to help Solomon Islanders harness their economic potential.”

Mr van Manen, Australian Federal MP for Forde in Queensland was in Solomon Islands last week to take part in Australia’s election observation mission.
