AUSTRLIAN MP SHARON CLAYDON CONGRATULATES SOLOMON ISLANDERS, ENCOURAGES MORE WOMEN IN POLITICS

Meeting with intending candidates for the recent National Election and the upcoming Provincial elections.

Australian Federal Member of Parliament for Newcastle, Sharon Claydon, has congratulated the people of Solomon Islands for a successful election last week.

Ms Claydon was part of the Australian High Commission team observing the elections in and around Auki township in Malaita Province.

“I am very impressed with the enthusiasm displayed by the local people in taking part in the democratic process to choose the leader that best represents their interests,” said Ms Claydon. “I was particularly impressed with how many women, young people and people with disabilities turned out to vote.”

“I would particularly like to congratulate female candidates that stood in the election. Although only one was elected, the other 25 showed great courage and leadership. It is these women who will pave the way for long term change in the Solomon Islands for future generations.”

Ms Claydon went on to encourage greater women’s participation in Solomon Islands politics.

“As a female politician myself, I know that women have much to offer at all levels of leadership” she said.

“During my visit to Solomon Islands, I met a number of impressive female leaders and political candidates through the Malaita Provincial Council for Women. I call on the new Solomon Islands Government to create an environment where women have equal opportunities to men.”
