Australian scholarships to study at Pacific regional universities

Solomon Islanders thinking of applying for an Australia Awards Pacific scholarship next year have until 16 June 2014 to lodge their application.

Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Andrew Byrne is urging people to act to avoid missing the mid June cut-off date for Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships, which are available for undergraduate and postgraduate studies at regional universities such as PNG and Fiji.

“The scholarships are an important part of our Partnership for Development with Solomon Islands and our investment in education is helping Solomon Islands to build a highly skilled and trained work- force,” Mr Byrne said.

“When scholars return home, they use their newly acquired skills to contribute to development in Solomon Islands, offering benefits to the whole country.”

“Information sessions have been held in Guadalcanal, Isabel, Makira, Malaita and Western Provinces to inform as many people as possible about the Australia Awards program. All sessions were well attended by students, public servants and the general public and we hope this will help people lodge applications and meet the mandatory requirements.”

The Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships are available for undergraduate and postgraduate study in two categories: open category for school leavers, private sector employees and those not in the work force; and public category for public servants.

Australia Awards are awarded on merit, transparency and equal access. Applications from women and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged. All applications must be lodged at the Australian High Commission Annex Office, at Heritage Park by 5pm on 16 June 2014.
